The Answer

As all good Douglas Adams fans know, the Answer to the Great Question of Life, the Universe and Everything is 42.  Yesterday was the 21st anniversary of my 21st birthday, which means I have achieved the Answer … and yet, I am no wiser than I was before.  So apparently, the Question itself is NOT “How old does one have to be to understand everything?”  Although, it could be “On which birthday should one eat immense quantities of cornbread and ollalliberry pie?” because the answer to that question is definitely 42. :)

I borrowed this photo from another website, but this is basically what my pie looked like last night :)

Happy Pi Day

Today is 3.14 which is pretty close to the value of pi.  I’m not much of a math geek (I really don’t like math, although I did make it all the way through calculus in high school and even got a 4 on the Calculus AB AP Exam) so I’m not going to talk about pi today.  I will, however, talk about pie.

I was never a big fan of pie until I discovered Polly’s Pies in Norco.  My big problem with pie has always been the crust.  I don’t really like it, but plain pie filling can be too sweet.  Polly’s makes their own crusts right there in the restaurant and it is divine.  I still won’t eat the thick bit around the edge but the rest of the crust?  Nom, nom, nom!

Ollalieberries in their natural habitat

My favorite pie is the fresh ollalieberry pie, which just happens to be in season right around my birthday.  This is a one crust pie filled with whole berries and just enough glaze to make it scrumptious, not sickly-sweet.

This berry is a cross between the loganberry (a cross between raspberries & blackberries) and the youngberry (a cross between blackberries & dewberries).  It’s a bit like a boysenberry, but not.  I get the feeling that all those berries are a promiscuous lot and it’s best to just call them “berries” and eat them up because they are so yummy.
